Photo Assignment #2, Marsh

21-year-old Courtney Williams prepares for an interview at Urban Outfitters in Washington, D.C. Williams is a recent graduate of the University of Maryland.

Williams munches on cut up fruit at Bagels 'N Grinds in College Park, Maryland. She laughs at the number of grapes in her cup.

Williams admires the flowers her boyfriend, Matt Walters, brought her for Valentine's Day. Williams and Walters both recently graduated from the University of Maryland, but both still live in College Park.

My grandmother, Lucile Marsh, continues to find joy amidst the pain. Despite my 93-year-old grandfather quickly declining, she still smiles upon receiving a Valentine from her sweetheart of over 68 years. Though my grandfather is not able to leave the house, my mother, Nancy Marsh, purchased Valentines for the couple, and gave them cards to write notes on for one anther.

Marsh eats her dinner provided by an in-home hospice facility. "I'm trying to be brave," she says through tears. She talks about missing the conversations she used to have with her best companion. She does not know how she will go on once my grandfather passes.

Marsh, still wearing the same sweatshirt as the day before, takes her nighttime pills before bed. She lives with Parkinson's Disease, so her motions are often slow and she typically struggles to grasp onto certain items.
